1st Grade Sunflowers

“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.”

-Vincent Van Gogh

We have been learning a lot about Vincent Van Gogh in 1st grade art.  In our last project, children recreated their own Starry Nights.  A couple of weeks ago, 1st graders studied and sketched Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers on black construction paper. This week , 1st graders used oil pastels to bring their drawings to life. They learned how to blend oil pastels with their fingers, use white to brighten colors, and outline shapes in black to make them stand out.

Students used yellow, rust, brown, red, and white to color in their flowers. They used various shades of green, yellow, and white to outline their stems. 1st graders designed their own vases, tables, and backgrounds. Check out the 1st graders in action!

Such concentration!

I just love this vase below…

Here are a couple almost-finished pictures.

We will create frames and decorate them next week. Beautiful work, 1st grade!
